Goal 3 - Bloodtyping Notes
What is blood made up of?
Adult human has 4-6 liters of blood circulating in the body.
Blood consists of many types of cells floating around in a fluid called plasma.

- Blood transport oxygen to the body.
Blood consists of many types of cells floating around in a fluid called plasma.
- The red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen. Red blood cells transport oxygen to, and remove carbon dioxide from, body tissues.
- The white blood cells fight infections.
- The platelets help the blood to clot, if you get a wound for examples.
- The plasma contains salts and various kinds of proteins.
Blood Types
What are the Blood Types?
Not all blood groups are compatible with each other.
The ABO blood grouping System
Not all blood groups are compatible with each other.
- Mixing blood from individuals (blood transfusion) can lead to blood clumping. The clumped red cells can crack and cause toxic reactions.
- Blood typing important in solving cases of disputed parentage.
- Thus it is important to know the “blood type” of an individual
The ABO blood grouping System
- According to the ABO blood typing system there are four different kinds of blood type:
- A, B, AB, O.
- The ABO blood group is an example of a single gene that has multiple alleles – the gene is I.
- The gene I has 3 alleles - IA , IB or i
- O is the universal donor and everyone can take it
- AB is the universal recipient.
Charles Drew was a surgeon, teacher and scientist who helped devise the now universal blood-banking process to store large amounts of plasma.
Sample Problems

Mom = Dad= Offspring=
2. A child has type O blood. What can you tell me about the parents?
Mom = Dad= Offspring=
3. One child has type O blood, a second child has type A. Mom is type B, dad is type AB. Is the man the father of Child #1? Is the man the father of Child #2?
