Welcome to Kings Mountain High School and Biology!
Dear Parent/Guardian:
I am looking forward to a rewarding and productive year. In order to get off to a good start, I will spend some time getting to know my students, and they will get to know me. I will convey to them my high expectations concerning their academic performance and their behavior.
If your student is taking Honors Biology be aware that the curriculum is rigorous, yet is designed to allow highly motivated students to conduct an in-depth study of the course. Students in an honors course will be expected to work more independently on a variety of assignments and accept greater responsibility for their learning. Students who dedicate an appropriate amount of time and attention to an honors class will do extremely well.
I will work to ensure that ALL of my students have an educational environment, which promotes learning. Our school policy, as well as my class policy, is to establish meaningful rules which focus on safety and respect for people, property, and learning. Remember you will get out of this class what you put into it!
A key goal for my class this year is to maintain close contact with parents. When problems arise, either behavioral or academic, I will attempt to make contact with you as quickly as possible. My goal is to remedy small problems before they become big ones. I also want you to feel free to contact me at any time during the school year. Your student will benefit more if we work together.
KMHS would appreciate your help in the area of student attendance and daily class participation. I believe that for a student to do well they need to be at school on a regular basis. When a student is absent and fails to make-up work, they get behind and it impedes student performance. Here at KMHS we allow only 6 absences for a semester course and 12 absences for a yearlong course. If a student is absent, the student should immediately make arrangements to make up the assignments.
Please be aware that I will be sending home a progress report every 3 weeks. Students will receive a report card every 9 weeks. If you do not receive these, please contact me about your student’s progress ASAP.
To be effective, I need your support. Please discuss this letter with your student, as well as the attached discipline plan and class syllabus. I welcome your questions and comments concerning your student’s academic progress this year. Please do not hesitate to call. You may contact me at the school (704) 476-8330 or via email at [email protected].
I look forward to working with you and your student this year to ensure an excellent educational experience. Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sara J. Tharp-McComas, P.G., M.Ed.
